Pitcairn – Small island with a big heart!

Soren Larsen's visit to this very special island - May 2006

Pitcairn island by Tall Ship

Voyage Crew John B. relates his Pitcairn impressions.

" We made our landfall at Pitcairn Island at first light on Tuesday 9th May, and anchored in Bounty Bay.
A party of Pitcairners came out to the ship in one of their longboats to transfer the voyage crew to shore after a precarious jump as the two vessels rose and fell on the swell.

An even bigger party greeted us warmly at the landing place.

Barry presents the plaque to Jay, the major.

Yoohoo! We are here!
All 13 voyage crew were adopted by various families and taken to their homes for a 4 day stay. We soon became part of the family and our hosts made us feel quite at home.

We were taken around all the main sights and viewpoints around the island to admire its lugged beauty, and given huge quantities of food at every mealtime. The fresh fruit and freshly caught fish were particularly enjoyable. A couple of visitors were able to go fishing with their hosts. All 14 of the permanent crew were able to spend one night ashore.

A party of Pitcairn Islanders were able to join us on board Søren Larsen to look around the ship and have a go at climbing the rigging.
A plaque, carved by Dan and Nick to commemorate our visit was presented to Jay Warren, mayor of Pitcairn by captain Barry.

VRROOOM! And off they go...

On Friday it seemed as if the whole island (total population of 50) assembled on the quayside to say goodbye. We were given fantastic send off in the longboat, loaded with supplies of fresh fruit – the last we will get for a while.

Before departing in their longboat, our new found friends from Pitcairn sang their farewell songs."
