August 2002 - Pt Vila, Vanuatu
Soren
Larsen has just arrived back at Pt Vila on this the last day of
the Fiji-Vanuatu voyage. We have just had 8 days cruising the
outer islands north of Efate. We have had wonderful shore visits
at Malakula we Voyage crew went ashore and we were entertained
in the village with fantastic display of custom dancing (pics
follow).
We
departed for Ambrym and arrived off the village at Ranon on Friday.
We went ashore to find our friend Issiah Bong who had organised
guides from the village for the trek to the volcano inland. Arrangements
were made for an early start on Saturday morning and with cool
conditions it looked like a good day
for the
full day walk through the jungle, across the ash plain and the
climb up the
foothills to the volcano.

Cloud
and mist threatened to obscure the view down in to the crater
but things cleared to allowed us to see the molten lava down inside
the pit of the active mountain strenuous but worthwhile days walking
see most back in the village by 5pm.

On
Sunday we stopped and swam at the Meskelene islands and called
via Epi in Monday down the run back to Vila in quite stiff tradewinds.
All are well on board and the we farewell the our crew from Coopers
Coborn School tommorrow when they fly home to Britain via Fiji.
